ORDERS ARE DUE BY WEDNESDAY, 3/22! No Late orders will be accepted!!!!
If you are interested in buying a cotton uniform t-shirt, you can get one NOW! Just bring in $8 to Mrs. Langlie in Room 134 to pick one up for the season! Cash or check (made out to HMS in blue or black ink) will be accepted.
At the Track and Field organizational meeting on 3/15, the following information was shared with athletes:
1) To participate, you must return a signed permission slip (which can be turned into a coach or Studio One teacher) by Wednesday, 3/22. See the link above for an online permission slip, or one can be found in Student Services or one of the track coaches.
2) You must also have a current physical on file with the school nurse. To check to see if the physical we have on file is current, please have your student check the wall outside of the nurse's office to see that their name is on it. I encourage all participants to check to be sure JUST IN CASE! You may have gotten a physical but forgotten to turn it into the school. Athletes will not be able to participate in practices until we have a copy of this. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Johnson, our school nurse.
3) Practice and Meet Schedules were distributed to students and the expectations of practice were discussed. Athletes were told to dress for the weather, because we will be practicing outside! If there is a reason that your student cannot make a practice, you will need to let Coach Carollo know as soon as possible. If a student is not at school, they are excused from practices.
4) Coach Carollo discussed the events that are included in Track and Field
- 100M, 200M, 400M, 800M, and 1600M runs
- Hurdles
- 400M Relay (4 x 100M), 800M Relay (4x200M), 1600M Relay
(4x400M)
- High Jump and Long Jump
- Shot put and Discus
4) Mrs. Langlie told students about the Spirit Wear store and uniforms for meets. For regular season meets, students can wear either their gym suit top or a track uniform t-shirt. The uniform is the same logo as last season, so if you have one already, you will not need to purchase another one. For those wishing to purchase a cotton uniform t-shirt, they will be available to purchase at Highland (from Mrs. Langlie) beginning on 3/16. They will be $8. Sizes are YL, YXL, S, M, L, XL. You can pay cash (exact change please) or write a check payable to Highland Middle School (please use blue or black ink on checks only). If you prefer a Dri-fit material for the uniform, these can be purchased on the Spirit wear store online. You may also, if you choose, find sweatshirt and t-shirts on that store. The online store will only be open thought 3/22- no late orders will be accepted.
5) Eligibility- Highland is required to follow the IESA rules in regards to academic eligibility. Details that were explained to students can be found on the Program Overview tab below (by the calendar). In short, if a student is failing any class (overall grade is a U) on the last school day of the week (usually Friday) when grades are checked, they may not participate in meets the following Monday through Saturday, regardless of whether they bring up the grade in the meantime. They MUST still attend practices, but will not be able to be in meets. Failing to follow this rule could result in the entire team being removed from the State Competition.
If you have any questions that are not discussed above, please feel free to contact Coach Carollo or Mrs. Langlie, the Athletic Director.
Bus Update
Due to the conference-wide delay in many bus charters' arrivals, all game and meet times are approximate. If we need to wait for another team to arrive, we will do so.
6TH GRADE SPORTS OPPORTUNITIES FOR CUT SPORTS
AFTER THE TRYOUTS/CLINICS FOR EACH SPORT IS COMPLETED, IF THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH 7TH GRADERS TO FILL A COMPLETE ROSTER FOR ANY CUT SPORT, THERE WILL BE A SEPARATE TRYOUT FOR ANY 6TH GRADERS THAT WOULD LIKE TO FILL THE REMAINING SPOTS. TO BE CLEAR, AT NO TIME WILL A 7TH GRADER LOSE A ROSTER SPOT TO A 6TH GRADER, REGARDLESS OF ABILITY.
IF THERE ARE NO AVAILABLE SPOTS, THEN 6TH GRADERS WILL NOT BE ABLE TO ATTEND A TRYOUT. FOR CHEER AND POMS, IN ORDER TO LEARN THE ROUTINES, 6TH GRADERS CAN ATTEND THE CLINICS. THEY WILL BE INFORMED AT THE CLINIC WHETHER THEY CAN ATTEND THE TRYOUT ON THE FINAL DAY BASED ON NUMBERS OF 7TH/8TH GRADERS ATTENDING. FOR ALL OTHER SPORTS, AFTER THE SECOND TRYOUT, IF THERE ARE REMAINING SPOTS, THERE WILL BE A SEPARATE 6TH GRADE TRYOUT DATE ANNOUNCED. IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS, PLEASE CONTACT THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR, MRS. LANGLIE.
Information to Join any Highland Athletic Team
In order to attend the tryout for any of these teams, all athletes MUST have a current physical (within the past 395 days) on file with the school nurse as well as a signed permission slip. If you have any questions, please contact the Athletic Director, Mrs. Langlie, or the school nurse, Mrs. Johnson. Students should check to see that they have a current physical on file prior to the first tryout. Lists can be found on the wall outside of the nurse's office.
